Department of Standards

The role of the Department of Standardizing is to establish, manage and publish the geotechnical standards and notations

The following matters fall within the realm of the Department of Standards:.

1. The establishment, revision, abolition, and management of the Japanese Geotechnical Society standards with regard to geotechnical investigation and testing methods.
2. Creating the draft proposal to accompany the establishment, revision, confirmation and abolition of the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) .
3. Making the necessary adjustments of the geotechnical ISO standards and the domestic standards.
4. The publication, revision, and management of the standards.

ISO Task Committee

Task Force Objective

Because the Japan Geotechnical Society (JGS) is responsible for ISO matters on subjects related to geotechnical engineering, the JGS has established ISO Task Committee in the department of standardizing. The main work of this committee includes 1) to discuss and decide on new items in the proposed international standards and 2) to execute new standards from Japan. This Committee also collaborates with the Japan Industrial Standards Committee and the Japan Standards Association in order to enhance internationalized standards. There have been three subcommittees related to Geotechnical Engineering to date running under this ISO Task Committee. They are 1) TC 182 (Geotechnics), 2) TC190 (Soil Quality) and 3) TC221 (Geosynthetics).

Subcommittee TC182 (Geotechnics)

The ISO/TC 182 deal with geotechnics, and on particular with such matters as the laboratory testing of geo-materials. The investigations and the relevant proposed international standards are discussed.

Subcommittee TC190 (Soil Quality)

The ISO/TC 190 deals with soil quality. The committee deals with such matters as geo-environmental soil quality issues and discusses related investigations and proposed international standards relevant to this topic.

Subcommittee TC221 (Geosynthetics)

The ISO/TC 221 deals with geosynthetics, and discusses the relevant proposed international standards to this topic.

Geotechnical Notation Committee

Objective of the Geotechnical Notation Committee

Geotechnical Notation Committee is responsible for the preparation, review and maintenance of the drafts for standard terms, standard symbols, notations, units, thesauruses and so forth. The committee is also in charge of the support for computerized datasheets and datasheet programs.

Committee on Laboratory Testing Standards of Geomaterials

Objective

This committee deals with the following:

1. Drafts of new laboratory testing methods are established for standardization.

Objective

The objective of the Committee of Standardizing for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Investigation Methods can be summarized as follows ;

• The establishment and maintenance of Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) forGeotechnical and Geoenvironmental Investigation Methods.
• The establishment and maintenance of Japanese Geotechnical Standards (JGS) for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Investigation Methods.

Geotechnical Design and Construction Standards Committee

Objective

This committee promotes the creation of a design principle, a practical standard of design and construction, a standard for loading tests and field observations, and a standard for the maintenance of geotechnical structures. With regard to the practical standards, we study the extent to which the creation of standard for the design and construction (for example) meets practical experiments for specific methods. We also discuss the direction of the standard creation which society requires, and create policy and strategy.

Activity Achievement of the Last Year

We promoted the creation and modification of a practical standard ,a loading test and a field observation standard for geotechnical structures in line with the maintenance policy of the standard. The manual preparation of the design and construction manual of ground reinforced soil method in the practical standard and the revision work of the design and construction standard of the ground anchor were carried out with the funding of WG. The method used for the horizontal loading test of pile was revised in accordance with the loading test and field observation standard . Also, the proposals for standards revisions which were submitted from the WGs were discussed.

Activity Achievement for This Year

The committee and each WG will work together on the following four tasks.

1. Reviewing of the range of design and construction standards handled in the Japanese Geotechnical Society and a creation of a future plan.
2. Planning and reviewing the new standards and manuals for design and construction.
3. Revising the existing standards. (JGS4101-2000, the design and construction standards and support documents of the grand anchor)
4. Screening and accepting the funded design and construction manual.
